Music Genres
Alternative Jazz

though the genre is considered to be rock, some of its subgenres are influenced by folk music, reggae, electronic music and jazz among other genres.

a genre of popular music that originated in New Orleans around 1900 and developed through increasingly complex styles.

Blues Opera

a type of folksong that originated among Black Americans at the beginning of the 20th century; has a melancholy sound from repeated use of blue notes.

Classical Hip Hop/Rap

traditional genre of music conforming to an established form and appealing to critical interest and developed musical taste.

genre of music of the 1980s and 1990s in which rhyming lyrics are chanted to a musical accompaniment; several forms of rap have emerged.

Country Rock

a blend of popular musical forms originally found in the Southern United States. It has roots in traditional folk music, Celtic music, blues, gospel music, hokum, and old-time music and evolved rapidly in the 1920s.

a genre of popular music originating in the 1950s; a blend of black rhythm-and-blues with white country-and-western; "rock is a generic term for the range of styles that evolved out of rock 'n roll."

Gospel World

characterized by dominant vocals referencing lyrics of a religious nature, particularly Christian. Subgenres include contemporary gospel, urban contemporary gospel, and contemporary Christian music.

Most typically, the term "world music" has now replaced "folk music" as a shorthand description for the very broad range of recordings of traditional indigenous music and songs from around the world.
